For those of us still staying true to Gmail's web interface and resisting the lure of dedicated clients like Sparrow, Google is today rolling out a pair of custom theme options. Using the basic Light and Dark Theme presets, their big novelty is the ability to choose your own background image that slots behind your inbox view. You can pick directly from your Google+ gallery, upload a picture especially to be used in Gmail, or just point the mail client to an image url. Google will take care of the rest. We'd still like to see the old set of comprehensive theme customization options brought back — they were severely cut down after Google's latest redesign late last year — but getting to choose the wallpaper is at least a step in that direction.
