The London Olympics will set the stage for what is being described as "the world's first social media-driven light show." The BBC reports that positive or negative messages on Twitter using the hashtag #Energy2012 will fuel lights on the London Eye — so, if half the country is down on the Games, the Eye will only be half lit up.

This works by "Twitter sentiment analysis" according to Eye sponsor EDF Energy, which is working with the UK's foremost expert on the subject Professor Mike Thelwall. Algorithms assess the mood behind each tweet and assign it an overall positive or negative rating, with words like "brilliant" counting for three points and "failure" docking four. The light show will take place at 9PM every day throughout the Olympics and Paralympics.
