California's high-speed railway from San Francisco to Los Angeles is one step closer to becoming a reality with the passing of Senate Bill 1029, which grants the project necessary funds to begin construction. Once signed by California Governor Jerry Brown, the bill will provide an initial funding of $4.5 billion from the sale of voter-approved bonds and $3.2 billion in federal funding. The first stage of the $68 billion project includes the construction of a high-speed rail line between the Central Valley cities of Madera and Bakersfield. Once finished, a high-speed train ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles will take around 2 hours and 40 minutes, more than twice as fast as driving and up for four times faster than taking the existing Amtrak train service. While the passing of the bill is important to the overall project, it will take more than a decade before the high-speed rail line is complete.
