Thought you were happy with your phone's 720p screen? Hold that thought until you've seen 1080p resolution shrunk down to 5 inches. That's the vision we caught a glimpse of when LG showed off its prototype a few months back, and now Taiwan's largest LCD maker, Chimei Innolux, has announced a similar 443ppi panel of its own. Chimei says it's designed for use in smartphones, though obviously any devices to use it would be larger than the average mobile.
The company will be showing the LCD off at Touch Taiwan this week in Taipei, and Digitimes reports that there will be a 330ppi 9.7-inch display on hand as well. Assuming a 4:3 aspect ratio, at 2560 x 1920 Chimei's panel would significantly out-resolve the new iPad's 2048 x 1536 264ppi Retina display. It seems inevitable that we'll continue marching towards an even-higher-resolution future — the only question remaining is if your eyes are sharp enough to tell the difference.
