The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has released the largest-ever 3D map of the universe, captured by a 2.5-meter wide-angle optical telescope located at the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico. Consisting of about 400,000 galaxies, the map includes galactic bodies that have been in existence since the universe was half its current age. While the video already provides a look at a large portion of the universe, it is only the first third of the entire galaxy map that the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) intends to create. Once complete, the project will have measured the location of a total of 1.5 million galaxies.
