Microsoft preps for Surface launch with 32 pop-up stores

This holiday, Microsoft plans to open 32 pop-up retail locations across 20 US states in addition to shops in British Columbia, Toronto, and Alberta, Canada.

Microsoft today shared the entire list of pop-up stores it plans to open throughout North America this holiday season, and the company's retail presence will be much larger than originally believed. 32 locations will span 20 US states in addition to shops in British Columbia, Toronto, and Alberta, Canada. It will also mark the debut of Microsoft's chain in New York City — albeit temporarily — with one store slotted to open in The Shops at Columbus Circle. The rest are dispersed throughout various malls and shopping centers where they'll often be in direct competition with Apple for your hard-earned dollars.

Holiday 2012 is shaping up to be of huge importance to Microsoft with flagship launches in both hardware and software. Its much-anticipated Surface tablet will debut October 26th to coincide with the release of Windows 8. And though we still haven't heard an official date, we fully expect the company to get Windows Phone 8 devices on the market at some point this fall to capitalize on the holiday shopping season.

Microsoft hasn't yet outlined specific dates for when you'll be seeing these seasonal stores pop up, but we'll be keeping an eye out. The full list of locations follows below.

  • Mall at Green Hills – Nashville, TN
  • Mall in Columbia – Columbia, MD
  • Metropolis at Metrotown – Burnaby, BC
  • Montgomery Mall – Bethesda, MD
  • Natick Collection – Natick, MA
  • North Star Mall – San Antonio, TX
  • Oakridge Centre – Vancouver, BC
  • Penn Square Mall – Oklahoma City, OK
