Popular UK online TV service TVCatchup has published the first stable version of its free Android app, after a lengthy period of beta testing. Available to download in Google's Play Store, the app provides unlimited streaming access to a wide range of UK TV channels, including BBC1, BBC2, ITV and Channel 4, supported by advertising. Despite its name, TVCatchup does not provide on-demand video, focusing solely on live streams.

In our quick test of the app — unavailable to users outside the UK — video quality seemed good and the occasional ads were not overly intrusive. It will be interesting to see whether TVCatchup for Android manages to take a significant portion of the market away from the various dedicated apps provided by UK TV channels, who have not always seen eye-to-eye with the service.
