Sony sold over 1 million PlayStation 4 consoles in just 24 hours after its US debut, and a week later Microsoft achieved the same 1 million sales for its Xbox One a day after its launch in several countries. Earlier today, Sony revealed it has now sold over 2.1 million PS4s as of December 1st, of which 700,000 came from Europe and Australasia after two days of availability. Microsoft has provided an update on its own next-gen progress today, but it’s not what you’d expect.

While Microsoft says Xbox One owners have spent over 50 million hours in games and entertainment on the new console the last 11 days, the company is also providing some fairly meaningless game-related stats. Microsoft says over 3 billion zombies have been killed in Dead Rising 3, over 90 million miles driven in Forza 5, over 186 million enemies slayed in Ryse, and over 150 million combos completed in Killer Instinct. The figures show Xbox One users are clearly getting to grips with the launch titles, but Microsoft isn’t ready to provide an update on its console sales. "Eleven days in we are seeing record breaking sales and are selling every Xbox One we can make," says Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi. "Demand is far exceeding supply in the 13 countries we’ve launched and we are sold out at retailers around the world."

Microsoft could be waiting on NPD numbers

Microsoft’s lack of numbers to counter Sony’s own sales figures is likely due to the upcoming NPD figures for November. Although the figures will provide a slightly skewed view of initial sales (due to availability and release dates), Microsoft could be looking to those particular stats to provide any further progress updates. The company’s Xbox 360 console managed to secure 32 months as the best-selling games console in the US, before the PS3 briefly broke the record in September ahead of new console launches. NPD’s latest data is expected to be made available in the next couple of weeks.
