While the emotional debate over the respective qualities of film and digital is unlikely to be settled any time soon, reality appears to be kicking in for the industry. Variety has published a report on how studios, technology companies, and theaters have all collaborated to push digital projection as a more cost-effective method across the board, and the potential ramifications of that move. With digital prints distributed via satellite, the cost of transportation could eventually be reduced to just a tenth as much as it was with film; however, there will be a cost of a very different kind in the form of thousands of jobs that get lost if smaller theaters close down.
