When you hear the unexpected knock of a police officer on your door, you may not think about the fake ID you purchased a couple of years ago. But it turns out that the Secret Service built a tiny empire selling high quality fake IDs on the underground Carder.su forums, slowly amassing a collection of buyers' addresses and headshots. According to Wired, targets were oblivious to the sting for years, free to go about their lives without charge until the government swooped in and executed a large series of arrests. The operation was highly successful, capturing more than 20 sellers and buyers on the Carder.su forums and successfully shutting down the marketplace. None of the defendants' lawyers have mentioned the Secret Service-run marketplace in the pretrial motions, but one defendant's lawyer hints that possible government misconduct and entrapment are sure to lengthen the litigation process.
