Racing simulation Gran Turismo is set to be the next video game franchise to get a movie adaptation, according to a report in The Wrap. The film is said to be Sony's attempt to compete with "fast car franchises" such as Universal's Fast & Furious, Legendary's Hot Wheels, and DreamWorks' Need for Speed — the latter of which is based on EA's long running video game series.
'Fifty Shades of Grey' producers reportedly on board
At present there are few details on the film, which reportedly has Fifty Shades of Grey producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti on board. Many video game adaptations have been green-lit in the past only to remain in development hell for years.
Unlike some Need for Speed titles, the Gran Turismo games have next to nothing in the way of storyline, so any adaptation would need to bring quite a lot of original material to the table. Still, with over 70 million copies sold to date and the sixth major iteration coming to PlayStation 3 this year, the movie will at least have name recognition going for it.
