Hank Butitta is driving his master's thesis across the country. The architecture student bought an old Chevrolet school bus for $3,000 on Craigslist and then dumped another $6,000 into it to convert it into a 225-square-foot apartment on wheels. There's a toilet, a sink, a small stove, and modular sections that can transform from workspaces into makeshift bedrooms. Butitta and a friend, photographer Justin Evidon, are now in the process of living out of the bus as they travel in a more than 800-mile loop from Minnesota out to the West Coast, blogging the trip along the way.
On his blog, Hankboughtabus.com, Butitta frames the project as a testament to the feasibility of living in small spaces. The project also allows him to do some making and not just designing. "I was tired of drawing buildings that would never exist, for clients that were imaginary, and with details I didn’t fully understand," he says.
