Paul Reubens has hinted at the prospects of a new Pee-wee Herman movie for years now, but it sounds like there's a chance the long-rumored project might actually be moving forward. According to the Los Angeles Times, Reubens says that a director has been chosen for the next Pee-wee movie — and he also says that a script is complete and the project has secured the necessary financing. Those are some pretty big hurdles to clear, no doubt, but time will tell if the Judd Apatow-produced film will actually move forward to a casting and shooting phase any time soon.

Beyond the movie, Reubens also said he's hoping to bring Pee-wee back to TV in the coming year, as well. "Short of something unforeseen like the studio going out of business, I think it's very likely both these projects will happen next year," Reubens said. It's not clear if it will be in the same vein as Pee-wee's Playhouse or if he'll try something in a different format, but the revival that Reubens has been riding since his well-received stage show in 2010 (not to mention his occasional in-character appearances over the last five years) shows no signs of slowing down. Beyond his "next year" remark, though, there's no real detail on when the film or show might finally be available.
