We've known that a movie inspired by the Need for Speed video game franchise has been coming for some time. But today we're getting our first glimpse at the DreamWorks Studios project, which stars Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul in the lead role. Paul portrays protagonist Toby Marshall, a man framed for a crime he didn't commit who then sets out on a cross-country racing circuit to somehow exact revenge upon his enemies. The trailer takes on a fittingly dark and threatening tone. "Those who wage war against me will perish," Paul says ominously in the clip's voiceover, pledging to triumph over his adversaries (and race opponents, presumably).

Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) helmed the director's chair for Need for Speed, and its story — which steers clear of any specific game in the series — was written by George and John Gatins (Real Steel, Coach Carter). At first blush it's hard to tell the movie apart from yet another Fast & Furious sequel, but it's described as "a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the 70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise." None of that really comes across in this first trailer, which primary sticks to Aaron Paul, high-speed race sequences, and plenty of explosions.
