The Hollywood Reporter claims 300 star Gerard Butler is in final negotiations to star in a remake of cult '90s action film Point Break. If negotiations are successful, Butler would play the movie's antagonist Bodhi, a surfer-cum-bank robber previously played by Patrick Swayze.
Point Break told the melodramatic story of FBI agent (and former college football star) Johnny Utah — played by Keanu Reeves — who infiltrates a collective of south Californian surfers he suspects are secretly a group of mask-wearing bank robbers known as the "ex-Presidents." The Hollywood Reporter says the remake would widen its scope from the surfing scene, instead taking place in the "international world of extreme sports." Other plot elements, including character names, will apparently remain unchanged.
The role of Johnny Utah, previously played by Keanu Reeves, has yet to be cast
The movie is reportedly aiming to start filming this summer, with Ericson Core — better known as the cinematographer on 2001's The Fast & the Furious and Daredevil — in the director's seat. The role of Johnny Utah is yet to be cast, but applicants will need to be particularly talented at lying on the ground and shooting guns at the sky to appease fans of the original, who have been vocal in their rejection of the remake.
