Google has smartened up voice search in Android by making it now possible to call your friends and family based on what they are to you rather than who they are. Thus, to call a parent, you just need to say "call dad" or "call mom" instead of their actual names. This latest tweak is very much in line with Google's broader strategy of offering utility in exchange for information — in order for the system to work, you need to update your contacts to include their relationship to you. Today's change may be incremental, but it adds to a growing library of more sophisticated voice operations you can do with an Android phone, which together with Google's excellent voice recognition algorithms is making this interaction model ever more appealing.
