The Samsung Galaxy S5's waterproofing was one of its headline features, but if you need a little more resilience AT&T may have you covered. The previously leaked Galaxy S5 Active is now on sale, adding shock resistance to Samsung's flagship smartphone while keeping the same specifications: a 5.1-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, and a 16-megapixel camera inside a water- and dust-proof body with a heart monitor. There's an extra "convenience key" on the side of the phone that gives you easy access to all the phone's apps that are related to outdoor activity.
Although the casing looks hardier than that of the Galaxy S5, it's reasonably slim — a far cry from the bulky "rugged" phones of yesteryear that often looked closer to military hardware than something you'd carry in your pocket. It'll be offered in "camo green," "titanium grey," and "ruby red" colorways. But it's questionable whether there's as much of a need for this phone as its predecessor, the Galaxy S4 Active, since the regular Galaxy S5 already offers more protection against the elements than most devices on the market.
Still, if you're looking for a smartphone to take on a construction site or up a mountain, this may be your best bet. It's on sale now for $199.99 with a two-year contract, or through AT&T's various Next installment plans. You can also save $50 on a Samsung Gear Fit when bought at the same time as the Galaxy S5 Active.
