Here's what we already knew about Fast & Furious 8. It's set in New York. It's part of (supposedly) one final trilogy. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be around (who would stop him?). Family will be valued above all else.
Here's something new: Fast & Furious 8 will be helmed by F. Gary Gray. The Straight Outta Compton director confirmed it via Twitter this afternoon:
Cant ask for better partners than Vin, Neal & Universal. Excited to bring u the next chapter of the #FastFamily saga pic.twitter.com/zRGre14kKO

Gray's involvement in the movie was all but certain days prior, when Vin Diesel posted a photo on Facebook of the two in front of a framed collage of Fast & Furious photos. (No caption, but Diesel's eyes say plenty.) Gray is also rumored to be up for director of Marvel's Black Panther, but with that film now slotted for a February 2018 release, the timing seems a bit too tight.
After successfully shepherding the series for four films, Justin Lin handed off Furious 7 to James Wan (Saw, Insidious) in order to do projects like True Detective and the upcoming Star Trek Beyond. Wan, in turn, is now working on Aquaman for Warner Bros.
Fast & Furious 8 will hit theaters April 14th, 2017.
