Glaswegian maximalist Rustie (aka Russell Whyte) released a new single this morning, "First Mythz." It's the latest in a string of one-off SoundCloud cuts he's shared this year: the roaring, shiny "Big Catzz" was released back in July, and he made and released "160 Hospital Riddim" while being treated for diabetes in mid-October. Rustie described "First Mythz" as a "new track off the forthcoming album" in a Facebook post, so it sounds like he has a larger release in the pipeline, but the album doesn't have a title or release date yet. His last full-length release was last year's Green Language.
If you've spent any time listening to Rustie in the past, "First Mythz" will probably sound familiar. It's colorful, dynamic, and moves at something close to warp speed at its zenith. It also one-ups "dolphin" pioneer Skrillex by sampling an actual dolphin, which is hilarious. Dance music could use more marine wildlife, right? Much of Green Language was comparatively serene — it remains to be seen whether Rustie's new material will mark a full-scale return to this kind of manic pace.
