The nominees for the 73rd Annual Golden Globes have just been announced, paving the way for the first big award show of the coming year. Some of Hollywood's finest took to the Beverly Hilton Hotel this morning to make the announcement. The expected prestige films manage to come away with a handful of nominations, but there were a number of surprises.
Carol leads the way, but eyes will be on Leo
It looks like a close race on the film side, with films like Carol, The Revenant, and Spotlight leading the way for dramas, and The Big Short for comedies. Though she's facing big competition from Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander had a standout year, getting a nod for Best Actress for The Danish Girl and Best Supporting Actress for Ex Machina. However, eyes will almost certainly be on Best Actor, considering this is yet another year Leonardo DiCaprio is fighting hard to take home awards glory on his way to the Oscars.
As for television, megahit Empire has a real chance to take Best TV Series, facing off against Games of Thrones, Narcos, and Mr. Robot. Streaming series were really well represented this year (especially for Netflix), with nods going to Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, Narcos, Casual, House of Cards, Grace & Frankie, Master of None, and Orange Is the New Black. It's yet another sign that quality TV is happening online, and the shift isn't showing any signs of stopping.
Snubs abound, though. Tom Hanks and Tom Hardy got no love for their performances in Bridge of Spies and The Revenant, respectively. Mad Men, which ended last year, is conspicuously absent from the Best TV Drama category — the final season of a beloved, award-winning show would normally considered a shoe-in at the Globes. Meanwhile, Game of Thrones received no Best Actor or Actress nominations.
