As promised, a modern, 3D take on Edgar Rice Burroughs' mythic Tarzan is well on its way, and the first trailer is here. Starring True Blood alum Alexander Skarsgård as the Lord of the Apes himself, the adventure is set to take place years after Tarzan, otherwise known as English aristocrat John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, has returned to Europe after being raised in the Congolese jungle. But after being lured back into Africa by the Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz), he'll find himself digging deep into his past.
Skarsgård is also joined by the likes of Samuel L. Jackson and Margot Robbie in the film, with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows director David Yates directing. It's already clear that this Tarzan effort is trying its hardest to be a summer blockbuster, complete with plenty of CG and slow-motion fight scenes, but it's definitely an open question as to whether or not it will work. (To say nothing of how problematic a white savior epic set in the Congo in the early 20th century might seem to audiences today.) The Legend of Tarzan is slated to debut on July 1st, 2016.
