Star Trek Beyond's first trailer was supposed to hitch a ride on this week's premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but Paramount has gone ahead and released the clip this morning. (A German-language version leaked onto YouTube Monday morning, likely expediting the trailer's release.) The Fast and the Furious veteran Justin Lin is taking over directorial duties from J.J. Abrams — whose hands are now full with The Force Awakens — and you can feel some of that series' signature bold style creeping into Beyond. The trailer's studded with motorcycle leaps, dynamic action sequences, and liberal use of the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage." (It's a nice callback to the song's use in 2009's Star Trek reboot. Captain Kirk loves his early '90s hip-hop.) There are a few goofy gags too, suggesting Beyond could turn away from the dark self-seriousness of 2013's lukewarm Star Trek Into Darkness. Between Beyond and CBS's upcoming Star Trek series, Trekkies have plenty of new viewing material on the horizon.
Star Trek Beyond stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, and Idris Elba, and it's set to premiere on July 22nd, 2016.
