Two years after release, Nintendo's hingeless 2DS console is coming to Japan, and it's doing so in style. Tomorrow, preorders start for four transparent Pokémon-themed variants of the 2DS, each preinstalled with a version of Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, or Yellow, depending on the color.
The consoles will come out on February 27th, the same day Nintendo is re-releasing versions of the original Game Boy Pokémon titles for the 3DS Virtual Console. (It's also the 20th anniversary of the very first Pokémon release.) The blue and red 2DS models are already available outside Japan; they were launched alongside Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire late last year.
There are a few extra perks in the bundles, though. The 2DS will come with a decorative sticker and a special menu theme, as seen on the four models above, as well as a poster based on the games' town map. There's also a code for elusive Pokémon Mew, which — according to the Japanese Pokémon site — can also be used with the 3DS games Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, and Pokémon X and Y.
Each model costs 9,980 yen, or about $83 — the 2DS has cost $99 in the US since a price drop earlier this year. Unfortunately, while anyone can play the Virtual Console games next year, we have no idea if Nintendo's planning on selling these special bundles outside Japan.
