Entertainment Weekly just published a small but exciting first look at Marvel's upcoming film Doctor Strange, giving fans their first real glimpse at Benedict Cumberbatch in full costume as Dr. Stephen Strange, Sorcerer Supreme. Horror film director Scott Derrickson is helming the movie, and he let on that Strange is shaping up to be more bizarre than anything Marvel's released so far.

"I’m perpetually awestruck that I’m getting to make this movie," Derrickson tells the magazine. "I keep waiting for the knock on the door when somebody says, 'This movie’s too weird, we can’t make this.'"

"Waiting for somebody to say, 'This movie's too weird.'"

That the movie could actually be "too weird" should give everyone a sense of how deep into the original comic's psychedelic strangeness Derrickson is going, especially since Doctor Strange is set to coexist in a cinematic universe that's already filled with talking raccoons and ant-men. Of course, Derrickson is more than acquainted with the frighteningly bizarre; the director cut his teeth on movies like Hellraiser: Inferno, and is probably best known for his Sinister films. It's pretty clear that he's letting his freak flag fly free with this film.
