AT&T plans to offer gigabit internet service in 38 more metropolitan areas

AT&T is expanding its gigabit internet service, GigaPower, to "parts of" 38 additional metropolitan areas, the company announced today. Whenever those installations conclude, it'll bring the total list of cities with GigaPower to around 56. AT&T says it's aiming to double its fiber internet footprint by the end of 2016. GigaPower is already live in 18 areas now, with today's addition of Los Angeles and West Palm Beach, according to the company. Again, those are parts of each city — not the entire region.

The service competes with Google Fiber, and AT&T has made a habit of charging less money for GigaPower in cities where both are available to consumers, like Kansas City and Austin — and more in areas where they're not. Both companies have a growing list of cities where fiber connectivity is planned, but customers in most of those cities will still be waiting awhile before the super-fast, 1-gigabit-per-second internet data speeds are actually made available. AT&T's full list of current and coming GigaPower cities, which notably includes the San Francisco Bay Area, follows below.
