Facebook's Year in Review looks back on human tragedy and solidarity

Coming just days after Twitter's own retrospective, Facebook has just published its annual year-end review, surfacing the biggest stories, events, and trends of that past year. Echoing that earlier look, Facebook's review highlights a great deal of human suffering with a few rays of light: last month's devastating Paris attacks, the Nepal earthquake, the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis, and the legalization of same-sex marriage in the US.

Facebook compiled a series of top 10 list detailing what people in the US and across the world were sharing on the social network. The US presidential election topped the lists for Top 10 Topics both globally and in the States. But it should surprise no one that 2015 was an exceptionally hard year, with some of the most talked about topics having to do with the shootings in Charleston, terror in Paris, and protests in Baltimore. All this makes Facebook's "Let's stand together in 2016" tagline all the more appropriate.

General entertainment was somewhat more positive, with the most discussed TV show on Facebook being Game of Thrones, followed by The Walking Dead. And naturally, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the top movie in the world on the platform. It's still a mystery why Ed Sheeran is so popular, though.

Of course, no memory of 2015 would be complete without the shocking death of Jon Snow on Game of Thrones.
