Nicolas Cage will bring his unchecked emotional melodrama to Oliver Stone's upcoming movie, Snowden, a fictionalized biopic of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Deadline reports Cage will play the role of a former US intelligence officer.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Snowden

Cage joins a cast that includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, and Zachary Quinto. Cage and Stone have worked together before, in the 2006 drama World Trade Center.

Stone will adopt the Snowden screenplay from two books: Time of the Octopus, a novel by Snowden's lawyer Anatoly Kucherena, and Luke Harding's nonfiction work The Snowden Files, The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man.

Snowden arrives in US theaters on December 25th.
