Can customers lose access to e-books?


I have hundreds of digital books, magazine and comics purchased from Nook. Nook sales have been in steady decline over the past several years and last year hardware sales were down 62% and digital content down 29%. I am concerned Nook will fail and that I will lose all my digital content because it is my understanding that technically e-books are not owned by the purchaser. I have switched to Amazon Kindle but I am still concerned that I will lose all my Nook digital content. At one time I could transfer Nook books to another format but that program no longer works. Are my concerns justified and is there a way to preserve the digital content I have purchased?
