This is Harley Quinn and the rest of the Suicide Squad

Last month we got a peek at Jared Leto's new take on the Joker, and today director David Ayer has revealed the rest of the costumed cast from his upcoming film Suicide Squad. On Twitter the filmmaker revealed a new photo of nine different members of the cast (Leto's Joker not among them). It includes the first look at the movie versions of Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and Captain Boomerang, among many others.

From left to right, the characters pictured are Slipknot (Adam Beach), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and El Diablo (Jay Hernandez).

And Ayer later tweeted a picture of Will Smith in full Deadshot getup, mask and all:

Can you jumpstart an entire universe with just a couple of films?

If this sounds like a whole lot of characters for non-comics fans to keep straight, well... I certainly wouldn't disagree. But it's an unavoidable side effect given the strategy Warner Bros. is employing for its DC Comics shared movie universe. Rather than going for the kind of slow build that Marvel used when creating its franchises, Warner Bros. and DC are trying to jumpstart an entire universe's worth of characters with just a handful of films.

Zack Snyder's Man of Steel was the first film in the new series, and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice will open the floodgates next year with multiple heroes showing up. Superman, Batman, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman are all expected to make appearances when Justice opens on March 25th, 2016. Suicide Squad will do something similar, but on the less heroic side of the coin. With DC movies scheduled all the way through 2020, there's going to be a lot riding on these next two films. We'll be able to see how David Ayer puts all the pieces together when Suicide Squad opens on August 5th, 2016.

Update, 9:30PM ET: Added second photo of Deadshot.
