The rumors are true: Netflix has agreed to produce a 12-episode third season of Black Mirror, the celebrated British anthology series that's helped to revitalize near-future sci-fi this decade. The show's first seven episodes — that's two three-episode seasons and a Christmas special starring Jon Hamm — aired on the UK's Channel 4 from 2011 to 2014. Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones will continue to produce and run the series in its new home. There's no premiere date set yet — the new episodes "are scheduled to begin production in late 2015."

Netflix's acquisition of Black Mirror isn't a total shock: it already had the rights to the show's back catalog, and the service was rumored to be producing new episodes of the show earlier this month. It's also picked up several other shows during the middle of their lifespans, including AMC's The Killing and A&E's Longmire. The service hasn't provided any details on the show's rights in the UK and Ireland; according to a press release, the details are "still being determined."

"Netflix connects us with a global audience so that we can create bigger, stranger, more international and diverse stories than before, whilst maintaining that 'Black Mirror' feel. I just hope none of these new story ideas come true." Brooker's already seen one of his old story ideas gain new relevance in recent weeks — maybe he shouldn't get his hopes up.
