Ryan Coogler, writer and director of the critically acclaimed Fruitvale Station and the Rocky installment Creed, is set to helm Marvel's Black Panther, the studio confirmed in a tweet today. Coogler has been a rumored favorite for months, and the choice was a buzzy topic in Hollywood after the movie was left without a director when Selma's Ava DuVernay passed on the project earlier this year.

Black Panther, set for a 2018 release starring Chadwick Boseman in the titular role, won't be the first time we see the superhero. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo say the character will make his debut in next year's Captain America: Civil War, and we've already seen a glimpse of him in that film's first trailer back in November.
