Today during a panel at the Television Critics Association, Fox execs announced that Empire and Scream Queens will both be returning for new seasons, The Wrap reports. Empire will return for a third season and Scream Queens will return for a second, although no exact dates have been given for either premiere.
Cookie and Chanel, back again
The Empire renewal is no surprise, as the story of record label mogul Lucious Lyon and his family has become one of the most popular shows on television. Even as it hit a season low this past fall, Empire still managed to maintain its standing as the most-viewed show in its time slot, according to Variety. Just last week, Taraji P. Henson nabbed a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Empire's most watchable character, Cookie Lyons.
Scream Queens, on the other hand, debuted to lukewarm numbers (about 4 million viewers to Empire's 9.90 million during its premiere). But the show, a caustic dark comedy about murder and good hair, added 2 million "delayed viewers" and 1 million viewers streaming on Fox Now and Hulu in the days following its network debut. It's not clear if anyone from the first season cast will be returning for the second season.
Details on the plots of these new seasons are scarce, although The Wrap reports that the second season of Scream Queens will be set in a hospital, instead of on a college campus. I'm predicting lots of blood and exasperated eye rolls in that show's future.
