First Click: Kanye's done, Twitter's exodus, and a preview of the week ahead

January 25th, 2016

While most mortals were lounging about this weekend, sipping cocktails in handsome silk pajamas, Kanye finished “the greatest album of all time,” as two aging quarterbacks led their teams to the brink of NFL championship. A game so important that it’s named for a giant piece of tableware. Oh, and Twitter lost five executives, including its head of Vine who's headed back to Google to work on VR. Well, at least you're rested and ready to tackle the week ahead.

We’re smack in the middle of earnings season with Apple and AT&T set to announce on Tuesday, while Amazon, Microsoft, and Samsung Electronics will show us their respective financials on Wednesday. Investors and analysts will be keen to see any signs of growth, with Apple acting as the harbinger for the entire industry of consumer electronics. Speculation of a market slowdown, especially in China, has already gouged the stock price of the world’s most valuable company. A crown that Alphabet (Google’s parent company, remember?) will be eager to don when it announces earnings next week.

The Sundance film festival is also in full swing this week, with many more film reviews and highlights to come. We’ll also be checking out the Hyperloop pod design competition later in the week, so stay tuned for that and plenty more.

But first, let’s catch up on the week that was.
