This is the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 cabriolet, and it is, according to the press release heralding its arrival, the “ultimate in open-air exclusivity.” Limited to just 300 units — and only 75 in the US — it certainly has that last part right. It’s not quite the amazing Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 coupe that debuted at Pebble Beach earlier this year, but it’s still pretty good.
The S 650 is equipped with a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 that puts out 621 horsepower and a mind-boggling 738 pound-feet of torque. Top speed is 155 mph, though I can’t imagine that you would want to do that with the soft top down.
Mercedes says the design philosophy behind the car is “Sensual Purity” — and that it is “both hot and cool at the same time.” It has a “waterfall-like” seat upholstery, with “flowing lines” built into the seat upholstery. The trim is designed to create a yachting feel, inspired by the outrageous Mercedes-Benz Style “Arrow 460-Granturismo” yacht.
In the US, it’s available in just three color schemes: the Zircon Red with porcelain and black interior that we see here, Cote d’Azur Blue with porcelain and saddle brown interior, or designo Diamond White [sic] with porcelain and Yacht Blue interior. Regardless of your choice, all S 650 owners will receive a travel luggage set made with the same leather used in the car. Each comes with chrome-plated “1 of 300” lettering (as does the car) to remind you of its exclusivity. Rounding out the arrangement is an included car cover made out of the same color cloth as the soft top, complete with diamond quilting and the Maybach emblem.
