Even though Rogue One isn’t getting a sequel, that doesn’t mean it isn’t important to Star Wars lore and that its characters won’t have other chances to pop up. It looks like Saw Gerrera, the extremist Rebel leader played by Forest Whitaker, will make an appearance in the Star Wars Rebels animated series.
Spoilers ahead.
Saw recently appeared in a Toys R Us poster for the next season. It was first seen by Rebels Reactions:

For all that’s been said about Rogue One being a standalone story, it already pulls a great deal from established elements from Star Wars’ mythology. Saw actually made his first appearance in the Clone Wars animated series, making him the first character introduced in an animated series to make the jump to the big screen.
Fans who might have felt Saw’s backstory felt hazy can chalk it up to the fact that he’s already a fully developed character. The only trouble is that it was during the fifth season of The Clone Wars that aired back in 2012. However, with his ties to both the Jedi and to the Rebellion, he’s more important than people might realize, and we’ll soon get to see what he was up to in the years before the Death Star was completed.
All this goes to show that all the work Disney is doing not only for the films but the Star Wars comics, TV shows, and novels interconnect and build on the same story, much like what has already been done with Agents of SHIELD and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So if you want to get the most out of the saga, it might be worth it to get your hands on everything you can. That way, you won’t be confused if Ahsoka Tano pops up in the upcoming Han Solo movie.
