It doesn't take much for Larry David to impersonate Democratic presidential nominee Bernie Sanders — after all, both are balding, somewhat grouchy old Jewish men from Brooklyn. And Saturday Night Live didn't miss the opportunity. With David hosting the show last night, we were treated to the first (and last) episode of Bern Your Enthusiasm.
The skit ended up feeling a whole lot like an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, even though David is playing Sanders, not himself. Perhaps that's precisely because David's typical schtick seems to match Bernie Sanders' demeanor so well. Like any episode of Curb, it revolves around how a simple misunderstanding can have disastrous consequences.
It's not the first time David has impersonated the candidate on Saturday Night Live. That happened back in October and again in November.
Sanders himself also appeared last night, as expected. He was featured briefly in a skit about saving the women and children as the Titanic succumbed to the ocean. David played a wealthy man claiming that he should get a spot on a life raft, and Sanders comes out to say: "I am so sick of the one percent getting this preferential treatment!"
