Even cybernetic gorillas play Hearthstone

Overwatch isn't just the next game from Blizzard, it's also the company's first new property in close to two decades. And the company that brought us worlds like Azeroth and Sanctuary seems intent on making sure its latest creation is equally as memorable. Ahead of Overwatch's launch, Blizzard is releasing a series of animated shorts, starting with "Recall," which you can view above. The eight-minute-long clip delves into the backstory of one of the more intriguing Overwatch combatants, a cybernetic gorilla known as Winston, who's not only a scientist, but an avid Hearthstone player, too. Blizzard plans to release two more shorts as part of the series.

The game itself is a multiplayer first-person shooter set in a near-future version of Earth, where teams of six face off against each other. Like other popular multiplayer games — notably strategy titles like Dota 2 and League of LegendsOverwatch features a large roster of "hero" characters, each with distinct skills and abilities. Winston is joined by everything from a ghost-like mercenary to the world's strongest woman, for a cast that totals more than 20 characters at launch. In addition to the animated shorts, Blizzard is also creating a comic book — called Overwatch: First Strike — to further flesh out the universe.

Overwatch is launching May 24th on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
