BMW's i8 is even prettier in Protonic Red

The world debut of BMW's sensationally beautiful new i8 variant

Let's be honest, the Geneva Motor Show is a beauty contest above all else. None of the cars here move, very few are ever allowed to even make a sound, and the majority of press coverage is built around their appearance. This is why every new car here has to look new, and it's also why companies with no immediate novelty to announce are introducing special editions or fresh design options. BMW has chosen this grand Geneva event to give us our first in-person look at the Protonic Red BMW i8, and it looks stunning.

The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car that attracts attention everywhere it goes. That was true in its original silver and blue attire and it will be even more so with the new Protonic Red. I've already confessed my fondness for a bright, rich, unapologetically eye-catching rosso color with the Lamborghini Huracán, and this new BMW i8 lands at a very similar spot on the spectrum. It's not demure, and not everyone will feel at ease commuting the kids to school in it — but those who do, those who are happy to have the other kids talking about the cool parents with the electrically powered sports car, they'll love this new variant from BMW. The company promises the i8 Protonic Red will be available "soon," which given the lack of technical changes in the car — it's just a new interior set and a lovely red paintjob — should indeed be the case.
