Blade Runner star Rutger Hauer, Harry Potter's Matthew Lewis — yes, that's Neville Longbottom — and Corey Johnson are headlining Alien: Out of the Shadows, an audio drama out of the Alien universe that's available in full on Audible today. (It's coming out to celebrate Alien Day, which apparently takes place on April 26th because the pivotal planet in the original Alien is named LV-426.) The drama is based on Tim Lebbon's 2014 novel of the same name, a canonized entry in the series that takes place in between Alien and Aliens. A mining engineer has to grapple with ruthless aliens and a rogue AI unit trying to secure a live sample; Hauer plays Ash, the artificial intelligence. (Of course, a similarly motivated AI (played by Ian Holm) was destroyed at the end of the original Alien — same behavior, different unit.) You can hear a sample from the drama over at Entertainment Weekly.
Alien: Out of the Shadows is a more intense listen than you might expect from an audiobook. Director Dirk Maggs peppers the narration with frantic sound effects and uses sound design to turn the narration into something more than just a straight read-through. "Working on such a famous franchise was a challenge, but an amazing one to have," said Hauer in a statement. "It was fascinating to focus on just how powerful the voice can be for such a unique, non-human character like Ash. In the art form I work in, creating compelling audio drama is the ultimate illusion."
