First Click: Code Conference, Computex, Civil War II, and more in the week ahead

May 30th, 2016

After a relatively slow week in tech we’re in for a biggie this week with two massive events: Computex and Vox Media’s Code Conference.

Computex has already shifted into high gear with Sam Byford in Taipei covering the action live all week long. Asus kicked things off early with a MacBook killer and a trio of nice looking phones as part of its “Zenvolution” event. It’s the biggest week of the year for Taiwanese tech with plenty of phones, chips, PCs for VR gaming, and lots and lots of gadgets to come.

Tuesday marks the start of Recode’s three day Code Conference. This year’s list is one of the biggest and most prestigious ever in Code’s 14 years. Tune in to watch Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher grill a list of tech dignitaries that includes Elon Musk of SpaceX and Tesla Motors; Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon; Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google; Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter and Square; Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook; Ginni Roomette, CEO of IBM; and Bill and Melinda Gates. The interviews are unscripted so anything goes, and usually does.

Wednesday marks the release of the Civil War II comic book series, the followup to 2006’s Civil War. Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez are the creatives behind it and the pair currently behind Invincible Iron Man.

You can also expect to see reviews of Flume’s sophomore album Skin, Gold Panda’s Good Luck and Do Your Best, and Lone’s Levitate.

Tegan and Sara's new album Love You to Death is slated for release on Friday, June 3rd. The lead singles "Boyfriend" and "U-Turn" premiered in early April.

Friday’s also the premiere of film festival darling The Fits. The drama paints a psychological portrait of an 11-year-old tomboy seeking acceptance.

But that’s all to come. First let’s get caught up on the weekend that was.

  1. Asus ZenBook 3 is thinner and lighter than Apple’s MacBook

Asus has announced its new ZenBook 3, an 11.9-millimeter device it's calling the "the world's most prestigious laptop." Asus Chairman Jonney Shih detailed the ZenBook 3 on stage at Computex,...

  2. This is the first unibody metal phone without antenna lines

Even by its own high standards, Asus outdid expectations with its Computex presser today. Not only did it announce a completely ridiculous home assistant robot and a thinner-than-a-MacBook laptop,...

  3. Tesla's Gigafactory sets grand opening for July 29th

Though the Gigafactory has been partially operational for months, Tesla hasn't yet officially "opened" its massive Nevada battery plant — but that'll change on July 29th, when some Tesla owners...

  4. Tokyo Thrift: Infobar is the most beautiful series of phones ever made

I know the question of the most beautiful phone ever made is a deeply personal one. The starkly minimalist iPhone 4 would be a good shout for many. Or the luxurious pillowy plastic of the Nokia N9....

  5. The Indistinguishable X-Men: the narrowing range of superhero emotions

Critics agree that X-Men: Apocalypse is a troubled film. They just don’t entirely agree on the core issue. The Week says it has a villain problem. Indiewire says it has an apocalypse problem. The...

  6. The interior of GM's 1990 CERV III concept car is the future we deserved

I went down a Wikipedia hole looking up Corvettes recently. I can't remember how exactly I got there (does anyone ever remember how they ended up down a Wikipedia hole?), but it did give me...

  7. Amazon built a tool that puts Alexa in your browser

Amazon's Alexa personal assistant is super useful in the Echo and lot of fun to use. But if you don't have an Echo or can't buy one because you're outside of the US, it can be hard to appreciate...

  8. Please don't make death threats because a video game got delayed

I can think of lots of reasons to delay a video game, and zero reasons to threaten to kill someone because a video game was delayed. And yet that's exactly what happened to No Man's Sky creator...

  9. This is your next jam: Flume, The Strokes, and more

Welcome back to The Verge’s weekly musical roundup. I’m Jamieson, I’m still your host, and you might’ve noticed a small change: we’re running on a Saturday! The shift one day forward comes with...

  10. The Verge Review of Animals: spiders

This column is part of a series where Verge staffers post highly subjective reviews of animals. Up until now, we’ve written about animals without telling you whether they suck or rule. We are now...
