Lady Gaga is circling the lead role in Bradley Cooper's long-gestating remake of A Star Is Born, according to Deadline. It'd become Gaga's first major acting gig since picking up a Golden Globe for her work as the Countess on American Horror Story: Hotel, though she's also set to return to the next AHS chapter in some form. The remake of the 1937 classic — its third, following a 1954 musical version with Judy Garland and a less beloved 1976 version with Barbra Streisand — will constitute Cooper's directorial debut.

Gaga sounds like a great fit

This new version of A Star Is Born has been kicking around Hollywood for half a decade, though this is apparently the closest it's ever been to entering production. The movie originally revolved around a core trio of Beyoncé, Russell Crowe, and director Clint Eastwood, though everyone from Will Smith to Leonardo DiCaprio was rumored for the lead male role. When Eastwood took on other projects and Beyoncé dropped out, he handed the reins to Cooper, another rumored male star; Beyoncé tiptoed around the movie again before Cooper confirmed she wasn't involved late last year.

Maybe I'm just saying this because I want this movie to exist in some form, but I think Gaga's the best fit yet. She can sing her face off; it'd serve as a solid stepping stone toward other dramatic projects; she oozes old Hollywood glamor. And she needs to work toward that EGOT somehow, right? (If that acronym's unfamiliar, read closely: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony. It's like the entertainment Grand Slam or Triple Crown, except it's way sillier.) She's only earned one out of the four (unless you count Tony Bennett). Let's hope she sticks to the role and releases some new music before production starts gobbling up her time.
