The first lady now has her very own Snapchat account. Starting today, Michelle Obama will begin posting Snaps from the White House, giving her followers a behind-the-scenes look at her daily activities, as well as the official events she and the president attend throughout the year.
The first lady's Snapchat launches ahead of her trip abroad
According to Joanna Rosholm, the first lady's press secretary, Mrs. Obama launches her Snapchat as a way to engage directly with young people on the platform. Her followers can also look forward to her trip to Africa and Europe next week. As part of the Let Girls Learn initiative, she's heading to Liberia, Morocco, and Spain to meet with young girls trying to better their educations. She'll be joined by Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto and Meryl Streep as part of the effort, and all three will appear in the Snapchat story detailing the experience.
The first lady's embrace of Snapchat is certainly of a piece with her overall grasp of social media. When The Verge interviewed her earlier this year, she expressed a desire to continue using social platforms to engage her sizable following online for the good of both youths and veterans. Even with the general election months away, there's still plenty of time to, as she said, "drop the mic on some of this stuff." Anyone who wants to keep up with her story can follow her at MichelleObama.
