Pop quiz: if someone told you they were going to see a new movie called Run the Jewels, what would you guess it was about? If you answered, "The rap duo Run the Jewels consisting of Killer Mike and El-P," you'd be wrong. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kevin Hart is producing an action-comedy with that name, but it's about a robbery — and it's entirely unrelated to RTJ.
In fairness, the phrase "run the jewels" did refer to stealing stuff before it became the name of the pair behind "Close Your Eyes and Count to Fuck." But if you Google "run the jewels" now, almost every result will be related to Killer Mike and El-P. It's hard to imagine the team behind Run the Jewels didn't know about the shared name; probably, they just didn't care. Because it's a colloquial phrase, the name is likely not a copyright violation. Strangely, the movie is at least tangentially related to hip-hop. According to THR, Run the Jewels will be about "a group of failed rappers who attempt to rob an eccentric hip-hop mogul." Call me a conspiracy theorist, but this can't be entirely an innocent coincidence, right?
Understandably, Run the Jewels (the music group) is unhappy about Run the Jewels (the movie). Both Killer Mike and El-P tweeted their annoyance, or at least confusion, that they weren't contacted about this. El-P said he'll be contacting lawyers, but it's not clear he really has any legal recourse.
excuse me while I go starve a savage pack of lawyers for 7 days.— el-p (@therealelp) June 21, 2016
For now, we'll just have to live in a world where we have to clarify which Run the Jewels we're talking about. But if anyone decides to make a movie called Meow the Jewels, that's another story.
