Over the past 20 years, there have been many, many pokemon, spanning multiple games and platforms. During that time there have been some great character designs, and also some... not so great ones. (Luvdisc, I'm looking at you.) A new Japanese trailer has just launched showcasing some of the creatures that will be featured in the upcoming Pokemon Sun and Moon. The video includes a handful of new species — I don't know their official names since it's all in Japanese — and, for the most part, they're all awful, with designs that are either completely unoriginal or just downright strange.
Take this little guy, for example:
It's literally just a box. It may have elements of a bug or a train, but it's still a box. How can a box fight? How can a box live?
Meanwhile, this thing...
... is obviously Falcor, the flying dog dragon from The Neverending Story.
But it gets worse:
This has to be the worst fish ever. Maybe worse than Luvdisc. It looks like a mean lake fish, the kind of grey-and-brown creature that puts up a fight when you hook it, but meanwhile it has the color scheme of a My Little Pony t-shirt. Don't even get me started on the smile.
The trailer's one redeeming moment comes at the end, when the snake-like creature transforms into a robot for some reason.
It's impossible to judge a new Pokemon game based on just a handful of new creature designs, especially considering there are more than 700 of the pocket monsters, a number that will only continue to grow. But these early reveals aren't instilling a lot of confidence in me. The trailer did do at least one positive thing, though — it made me realize Popplio isn't so terrible after all.
Pokemon Sun and Moon are coming to the Nintendo 3DS on November 18th.
