Terrence Malick's first IMAX film, Voyage of Time, hits theaters October 7th and you can watch a trailer for it right now.

Voyage of Time is about the birth of the universe. If you're thinking "wasn't there a lot of 'birth of the universe' stuff in Malick's 2011 film The Tree of Life?" you are correct, and Malick has said that much of this film is pulled from the same pile of footage. (Honestly, it is truly fascinating what it takes to be considered a genius auteur director these days.)

The trailer promises that viewers will "experience the unfolding of time," which is cool even though I think I pretty much do that always. It's a great choice of film for anyone who really liked Lucy, but just the solar system parts. Or maybe for huge fans of Mac desktop photos. Or for anyone who enjoys Disney's Earth Day movies but wishes they were narrated at one-eightieth the speed. Or for anyone who's high.

"experience the unfolding of time"

There will be two versions of Voyage of Time — a 40-minute IMAX version narrated by Brad Pitt, and a 90-minute 35mm version narrated by Cate Blanchett. The synopsis of the film describes it as "a cosmic experience — a hymn to the glories of nature, life and scientific discovery."

Malik has been working on Voyage of Time for over 30 years. In 2013, some of his investors sued him for breach of contract, which seems fair. It appears that everything has been worked out and everyone is going to get the beautiful nature documentary they have been clamoring for.
