Apple's Eddy Cue: 'We're not in the business of trying to create TV shows'

Yesterday Apple revealed the name of its first-ever unscripted TV show, an app developer competition called Planet of the Apps. Now, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter,  Apple's senior VP Eddy Cue has divulged a few more (admittedly vague) details about Apple's television aspirations.

Cue says that while the quality of TV shows today is at "an all-time high," the way we watch TV needs to do some catching up. But he doesn't really offer any solid solutions. When asked if Apple would consider offering a skinny bundle or live-streaming service, Cue said he's "not a big fan" of the skinny bundle and says people are already "happy" just paying for Netflix as an add-on to linear TV.

And even though Cue might appreciate the wide availability of prestige television, don't expect Apple to get in on the game anytime soon. He told THR that even if Apple were offered "a show pre-packaged with a big star," the company would probably refuse. "We're not in the business of trying to create TV shows," he said. He also says Apple is not actively trying to buy any studio or compete with Netflix.

The interview will probably give you more of a sense of what Apple's not trying to do with television, instead of what it is. But maybe Apple is just trying to leave its options open, and then say it was never really trying to do that in the first place if something doesn't work out. Cue said Apple agreed to work on Planet of the Apps because the company could bring something to the table, but the show doesn't really seem like a sign of things to come.
