The second season of Netflix's Narcos is launching on September 2nd, and today we got our first look at what the story's about. The trailer sets up an epic manhunt, with DEA agents Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) and Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal) on the front lines. Holbrook's voiceover — "this isn't a manhunt, it's an invasion" — implies the season will take us even deeper into the United States' infamous War on Drugs.
In fact it seems like a season of more: more gunfire, more lackeys getting shoved out of helicopters, and more expert glowering from Golden Globe nominee Wagner Moura, who stars as Escobar. The trailer is backed by the classic Styx track "Renegade," which seems a little on the nose but is appropriately chilling.
The first season of the show — which Netflix claims drew more viewers than season five of Game of Thrones — ended with Escobar escaping house arrest. Season two will pick up shortly after, and Holbrook's narration warns: "Pablo is never more dangerous than when you've almost got him." That may be true (and seems accurate, historically speaking), but right now I can't get over the cute little J.Crew sweater he's wearing.
Correction June 22nd 2:05 PM: A previous version of this article mistakenly referred to Pedro Pascal as "Pablo Pascal." We regret the error.
