Rovio is already planning a sequel to The Angry Birds Movie

Now that The Angry Birds Movie is the second-highest grossing video game movie of all time, it makes perfect sense that a sequel is on the way. The Wall Street Journal reports that Rovio Entertainment, the Finnish company behind the popular mobile series, is developing a follow-up.

Without giving much in the way of specifics, Rovio CEO Kati Levoranta told the Journal, "We have started planning the sequel to The Angry Birds Movie."

'The Angry Birds Movie’ made $346.9 million globally

It makes sense, of course. The Angry Birds Movie was a commercial success both in the US and abroad, pulling $346.9 million at the global box office on a $73 million budget according to Box Office Mojo. Given the company’s hardships over the last year, with layoffs and its former CEO Pekka Rantala stepping down, it’s easy to see Rovio wanting to bet on a potentially lucrative franchise.

However, that doesn’t mean Rovio will be making good movies going forward. Despite the film’s earnings and a star-studded cast, it wasn’t exactly a critical darling. The New York Times even went so far as to write in its review, "The kids of today deserve better."
