First Click: Our favorite sport headphones, 'fashionable' VR, and more in the week ahead

August 8th, 2016

Get ready for the launch of “fashionable” virtual reality headgear on Monday with the arrival of the V1 VR Glasses from Dlodlo. Resembling sunglasses that might be worn by a Vegas Elvis, the Dlodlo VR headset features a 2400 x 1200 display with 105-degree field of view, yet weighs just 88 grams thanks to the processing unit being offloaded to a portable, Android-driven slab about the size of a smartphone. Can these compact VR specs really compete with Oculus, HTC, and Sony? Probably not, but we’ll let you know for sure after we see for ourselves at a press event later tonight.

Our This is My Next pick for the best sport headphones is also coming this week as is as a deeper dive into the Xbox One S adapter.

In gaming, our own Andrew Webster will be sharing his thoughts on No Man’s Sky after it makes its North American premiere on Tuesday, nearly three years since the sci-fi exploration sim was first announced.

Entertainment will have reviews for Rae Sremmurd’s sophomore album; Laika Studio’s stop-motion feature Kubo and the Two Strings; and Hell or High Water starring Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, and Ben Foster which hits US theaters on Friday.

In transportation we’re hoping to share our interview with Ralph Gilles this week, the man that leads design for Fiat Chrysler and is responsible for the look of Dodge's impressive SRT performance sub-brand.

All that and more in the days ahead. But first let’s take a look back at some of our favorite stories from the weekend that was.

  1. Apple Watch 2 coming this year with faster processor, GPS, and more: report

We may know a ton about the next iPhone already, but details on a potential Apple Watch upgrade have been conspicuous by their absence considering the original model was announced almost two years...

  2. This short film is designed to convince 'asshole' millennials to become organ donors

Coleman F. Sweeney is an asshole. He’s the type of person who buys truck nuts for his battered pickup to go along with his tacky bumper stickers and he shoots dogs with paintball guns that crap in...

  3. Driving the McLaren 570GT on the road less travelled

Red Sox or Yankees. Democrat or Republican. Chocolate or vanilla. All of these choices are deeply personal, and deeply held. They define who we are — especially that Red Sox / Yankees one, as my...

  4. Sony’s portable laser projector is everything I loved about the old Sony

Joel Johnson used to be a gadget blogger for places like Gizmodo, Wired, and Boing Boing, but now is trying to buy a farm. Every so often, a glimmer of the old Sony shines through. The Sony that...

  5. This is your next jam: Grimes, Tove Lo, and more

Welcome back to The Verge’s weekly musical roundup. I’m Jamieson, I’m still your host, and like many of you I spent my Thursday and Friday nights waiting on Frank Ocean. We’re well into the weekend...

  6. 7 new trailers you should watch this week

Stranger Things is the first thing in a long time to make me glad I have Netflix. I'm only four episodes in, so I don't want to say too much. Instead, I just want to ask what's up with one very...

  7. Snapchat's biggest threat is its own design

With the introduction of Instagram stories this week, the internet had a collective conniption fit over the cloning of one of Snapchat’s most popular features. Now, in addition to posting a...

  8. I raced a real tricycle through a virtual world and I didn't even die

Virtual reality experiences have done everything from sticking users into mechanical bird rigs to locking them inside treadmills, but it wasn’t until Saturday that I was able to complete the...

  9. Sneaky Zebra’s Prop Wars is the nerdiest fight you’ll ever watch

We really dig Sneaky Zebra’s cosplay videos, but their latest takes them out of the convention scene. Prop Wars: Prop Harder is a fantastic three-way duel with an entire arsenal of props from all...

  10. A Missouri man might owe his life to his Tesla Model X's Autopilot

Tesla has come under fire for its Autopilot feature after a fatal traffic accident earlier this year. The same feature might have just saved the life of a Missouri man who suffered a pulmonary...
