Is there no other choice but the iPad anymore?

I've owned a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 for the past couple of years and other than TouchWiz gawdawfulness, I've been happy with it. However, it's decided that it wants to fry its brains out slowly. The chip next to the front facing camera gets really hot and apps screech to a halt. I did a full reset of the OS in case there was some rampant app running in the background all the time, but that didn't help.

So now I'm looking around for a replacement. As much as I like the hardware (especially the screen) of the Samsung, I was hoping to find another brand to try out. I'll also miss the stylus. There's the Pixel C, but I worry about Google's commitment to tablets.

There just doesn't seem to be any decent Android tablets anymore. Even Samsung hasn't refreshed there line in over a year. This basically leaves me with the 9.7" iPad Air or the Pro, but I can't justify the price. And the Mini is too small for me. I'm not a fan of iOS. It looks too cartoony and the excessive lockdown is frustrating. I'm not a big apps person. I mainly use the most popular ones, so the ecosystem is not that important to me.

My main use is for browsing, emails and videos. Anything more strenuous, I use my laptop for.

I'm trying out the Acer Chromebook R11 and it's a really cool device that I can flip to type on, or use in tent/display mode to watch videos, but it's just too heavy to hold in tablet mode for an extended period of time. Also, the larger/wider 11" screen makes it awkward to type using the on-screen keyboard. Bottom line, is that I'm not sold on it.

Am I going to have to go to the dark side and get an iPad?
